Ed Burke - Owner
A native New Yorker, Ed moved to Minneapolis in 1980 after graduating from the University of Vermont where he earned his BS in Environmental Studies and Plant and Soil Science. He started Phillips Garden in 1985 from the basement of his home in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis. With a keen interest in modern design and a broad knowledge of plant material, Ed has installed a host of interesting landscapes throughout the Twin Cites and New England. He shares his time between Minneapolis and Vermont, where he lives and runs a plant nursery, Rocky Dale Gardens, specializing in hard-to-find and unusual plants.
Tyler Grissman - Director of Design-Build Services
Tyler received his Masters of Landscape Architecture from the University of Minnesota. He has worked in the landscape industry for over 15 years and is passionate about creating life enhancing outdoor spaces. He and his wife live in a Mid-Century home with their 2 daughters. Add to the mix 2 cats and 2 dogs, three of which are named after famous Landscape Architects, and you have...we’ll let’s say there’s never a dull moment. Oh, and he’s a sucker for Mid-Century Modern Design, Belgian beer and good coffee.
Kim Knutson - Director of Horticultural Services
Kim grew up on 8 acres west of Minneapolis tromping around in fields and forests. She earned a Degree in Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz with an emphasis in Horticulture, Agro-ecology, and Natural History. In Minneapolis, she found a niche in as an Estate Gardener and has been working in all manner of landscapes; urban and rural, public and private for 35 years. Kim’s company, Three Seeds, has happily merged into Phillips Garden as of Winter 2014 and she now serves as our Director of Horticultural Services. Kim’s passionate about designing with plants, restoring and renovating landscapes, and planting for pollinators.
She lives in the Seward Neighborhood of Minneapolis with her two cats, her college aged son and too many orphaned plants in her yard. In her spare time, she loves to cross country ski, travel, hike, play in the water, walk the neighbor dog and eat good food with friends amongst other things.
Margot McKinney - Business Manager
Margot took a circuitous route to Phillips Garden. After a B.A. in Economics and working in the theatre for 8 years, she went back to school in Landscape Horticulture. After meeting Ed in 1992, she (finally!) started counting the beans at Phillips Garden in 2001. She lives in SW Minneapolis with a neglected garden and a menagerie: a husband, two young adults, three dogs and two loud cats.
Lynn Aufderheide Biegler - Manager of Horticultural Services
Lynn joined the Phillips crew in the spring of 2008 to manage the Garden Maintenance division. She graduated with two bachelors degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison for Botany and Biochemistry in 2001 and has been gardening and designing gardens ever since. She spends her free time camping, cooking, sipping wine, painting and remodeling/decorating the 1916 home that her and her husband bought September of 2007.
